The Williams sisters are two of the most celebrated athletes in tennis today. Looking at both of their lists of achievements, it’s safe to say that Venus and Serena know exactly what they’re doing to maintain their athleticism and overall health.

Not surprisingly, the elder Williams has found ways to avoid getting sick while she’s on the road. But can her home remedies be trusted?

Health on the Road

Williams is currently an endorser of Clorox disinfectant wipes, which supposedly kills flu-causing bacteria and viruses

In a recent interview, the former Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) no. 1 player shared how she boosts her immune system using simple food supplements like garlic, oregano oil, and vitamin C.

Her avid use of garlic has actually even bothered her family members as they complain about the pungent herb’s smell. However, the 39-year-old athlete says that she’s gotten used to the smell of it that she doesn’t really notice it anymore.

While these remedies seem to be working for Williams, who’s still dominating the tennis court until today, is there actual scientific evidence supporting their effectivity?

Cold-fighting Vitamin C

Health enthusiasts are probably already familiar with vitamin C’s reputation as a cold-fighter and health booster. However, the evidence confirming the vitamin’s ability to prevent illnesses is still mixed despite the numerous research done on the topic.

While it may not save people from colds, the water-soluble vitamin is still lauded for its micronutrients. There’s also proof that not getting enough of it through fruits and vegetables can lead to fatigue and scurvy.

Oregano Oil Benefits

The herb has reportedly been used by humans for thousands of years in and out of the kitchen

Meanwhile, experts say that oregano oil is indeed beneficial for people because of its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

What more, it’s packed with plenty of antioxidants. The oil derived from the culinary and medicinal herb is also able to inhibit certain types of viruses including those that are associated with the flu.

Still, experts note that more research is needed to determine whether oregano oil could really be helpful in easing the symptoms of colds in people. In the end, people are advised against solely relying on it to cure their illness.

The Power of Garlic

Garlic is considered to be a culinary staple and is present in numerous recipes of different cuisines

Likewise, garlic has been a remedy staple for a long time. And it seems like science-backed evidence proves its effectivity, too.

According to research, there are compounds present in the pungent food item that can boost the body’s white blood cells. What more, it’s also been proven to actually alleviate the symptoms of the flu and colds.

But before you double your garlic use when cooking meals, remember that experts still maintain that there is still no replacement for a well-balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle to fight off disease.
